Here in Scotland, the heather is turning. The breeze has that crisp edge of autumn, and as we say here, the nights are fair drawing in. You might think that as we face the coming winter, our hearts are already longing for the endless days of summer.
But autumn is also a magical time of year, when life slows down a pace from the busy season. It’s time to enjoy cosy nights in front of roaring fire wrapped in a warm woollen stole. Or catching up with friends, or gathering in the pub for a lively tune- not to mention having that extra bit of time to catch up on our knitting!
Autumn also means one of our favourite island traditions - Shetland Wool Week. It starts 28th September and what a sensory feast it is. The earthy scent of lanolin. The vibrant colours of dyed yarn. The rhythmic click of knitting needles. And of course, those adorable Shetland sheep.
The best part, though, is the warmth of the wool community united by a shared passion. It’s about slowing down, connecting with the source and rejoicing in the journey from fleece to finished garment. It’s a pleasure to be surrounded by fellow enthusiasts, sharing stories and learning from the masters. It truly is woolly heaven!
And as we get ready for Shetland Wool Week, our thoughts naturally turn to how best to celebrate the spirit of the occasion- and more importantly, how to carry that spirit with us long after the last stitch is counted.
The Aurora Jewellery collection of wool tartan products celebrates the essence of Scotland’s textile heritage. Imagine wrapping yourself in a luxurious merino or lambswool tartan stole, scarf or serape, its intricate patterns echoing the natural beauty of our country.
Our exclusive ‘Spirit of Shetland’ tartan, in particular, is a wearable piece of heritage, a reminder of the raw splendour and enduring spirit that defines these islands. Not forgetting our caps, handbags and made to measure kilts, in a variety of tartans to suit every taste and palette.
Think purple Orkney Heather, shimmery Northern Lights, the soft pastels of our Princess Diana Memorial Tartan and our vibrant new International Island Games tartan. So many gorgeous colours, so little time!
And for those who appreciate the practical beauty of Scottish textiles, our Bucktrout Harris Tweed® jackets are simply divine. The legendary durability and unmistakable texture of Hebridean wool, woven with generations of skill and tradition, offer a timeless elegance that is perfect for taking on the autumn chill.
Of course, no wool-lover’s collection is complete without a nod to the creatures that provide our precious yarn, so we are delighted to introduce our new sheep jewellery charm!
It’s a small, perfectly formed tribute to the origin of all this woolly wonder. This piece of sheep inspired jewellery is a secret smile for fellow wool enthusiasts, and an enchanting way to keep the spirit of the flock close to our hearts.
Shetland Wool Week is a celebration of connection – connection to nature, to tradition and to each other. Filled with the promise of inspiration, we are ready to face the bracing North Sea winds wrapped in the warmth of our Scottish wool tartan - the perfect partner for an autumn filled with creativity, warmth and the enduring magic of wool. We can almost hear the wool calling!
